ANTERIOR PITUITARY GLAND The hormones of the anterior pituitary gland are: 1. Growth hormone (GH; also called somatotropin) - This hormone acts on bone tissue to accelerate its growth in the body. 2. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH; also called thyrotropin) - This hormone stimulates the growth of the thyroid gland and its secretion of thyroxine. 3. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) - This hormone stimulates the growth of the adrenal cortex and increases its secretion of steroid hormones. 4. Gonadotropic hormones - These hormones influence the growth and hormone secretion of the ovaries in females and testes in males. In the female, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) stimulate the growth of eggs. In the male, FSH influences the production of sperm and LH stimulates the testes to produce testosterone. 5. Prolactin (PRL) - This hormone stimulates and sustains milk production after birth. 6. Melanocyte-stimulating hormones (MSH) - This hormone influences the formation of melanin and causes increased pigmentation of the skin. |
